Denver, April 25, 2007 -- Governor John A. Love of Colorado signs the first liberalized abortion law (based upon a model created by the American Law Institute) in the United States, allowing abortion in cases of permanent mental or physical disability of either the child or mother or in cases of rape or incest. This amended Colorado law on abortion has been on the books for over 100 years.
Similar laws will soon be passed in California, Oregon, and North Carolina. According to Governor Love, "The new law does several things. First it extends beyond the possible death of the woman or her serious physical injury to include mental impairment of a serious and permanent nature when verified by a psychiatrist. It also extends to cases in which it is likely that the child would have a grave and permanent physical deformity or mental retardation.
Finally it extends to certain cases of rape and incest. ... The bill itself is completely permissive, not requiring any hospital, doctor, nurse, potential mother or any other person to act in any way to terminate a pregnancy at any time."
Early in the legislative session, Governor Love reportedly said that easing abortion restrictions "sounds like something I can support." Now, however, he says: "The action of the Legislature in passing a bill which seeks to amend Colorado law in regard to the legal termination of certain pregnancies has presented to me one of the more important and difficult decisions of my experience in office."
Leonard Carlin, president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Denver, says "My impression was that he was one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the bill."

April 2012 UPDATE: CRTL's Proposed Unborn Victims of Crime Act was passed by the House but the Democratic-controlled Senate tragically is expected to vote down this single-sentence bill:
"If the commission of any crime codified in this Title [18] or Title 42 of the Colorado Revised Statutes is the proximate cause of death or injury to an unborn member of the species Homo sapiens, the respective homicide and assault charges for that death or injury may be brought contemporaneously with the underlying charges."
No Need To Further Define "Unborn Member": Pro-abortion critics will mock those advocating for protection for unborn children claiming that our laws would define skin cells, sperm, or even kidney stones as persons, but of course this is simply obfuscation. The above language sufficiently identifies the unborn child because only a child is eventually "born." Other organs or cells may be removed from the body but they are not "born." Only a child is "born." Thus an "unborn member" of the human family refers to the little person (biologically speaking, the organism) in mom's womb who eventually could be "born" unless miscarried (natural death) or killed (homicide). Conventional Wisdom Busted as 30% Oppose ALL Abortion: Conventional wisdom claimed that only 15% of voters in America will support a 100% abortion ban (which Personhood requires, even in saving the mother's life when the need is not to "terminate" but to deliver the baby). CRTL is proving that all the Gallup polls and claims of politicians vastly underestimate how many people are willing to protect every innocent child without exception.
Personhood Vote Grows from 2008 to 2010: The YES vote on Personhood grew to narrow our loss from a 3-to-1 defeat in 2008 to a 2-to-1 defeat in 2010 with now 30% voting YES on a 100% abortion ban and personhood. That encourages us!
Gains Despite Dem Turnout: Significant personhood gains were made even in a heavily Democratic year. "Turnout in Colorado actually swung from +1 GOP in 2008 to +5 Democratic in 2010, a 6-point move," reportedThe Weekly Standard. So even with a much more hostile electorate (Democrats trend "pro-choice"), personhood gained tens of thousands of additional votes when Colorado's massive grassroots campaign put pro-life educational materials into the hands of hundreds of thousands of voters. For we can reach the hearts and minds of our fellow human beings with the power and simplicity of the personhood message that from their biological beginning every person has the God-given right to life.
Gains Despite Pro-life Opposition: The triumvirate of pro-life opposition to fighting for personhood in Colorado comes from Focus on the Family, "National" Right To Life, and the Roman Catholic Archbishops. These groups are working to kill personhood bills and oppose personhood amendments in states across America (just a couple 2011 examples: Louisiana in 2011, Mississippi). The truth eventually wins, regardless of which leaders or groups oppose it. Yet in Colorado, we might win sooner if only these "pro-family" organizations will stop opposing the effort to compel the government to enforce each child's right to life, and actually begin advocating for enforcement of the God-given right to life, something that all of these groups currently refuse to do. The pro-life industry opposes personhood based on: - long-answered objections and worn-out cliches, and based on - a self-defeating insistence on waiting till the U.S. Supreme Court is ready (which history shows could take centuries) - a lack of courage and willingness to educate the leaders and the people on the God-given right to life of every child. Instead, the pro-life industry has raised hundreds of millions of dollars promoting child-killing regulations while supporting politicians who have exceptions (meaning that they oppose the dismembering of only some children). For these reasons, Colorado RTL is not affiliated with "National" but with "American" Right To Life, the pro-personhood national organization.
The Denver Post's 3-to-1 Headline is Wrong; Should be 2-to 1: The personhood loss in 2008 was closer to 3-to-1. But the increase in the personhood Yes votes in 2010 closed the gap to close to a 2-to-1 ratio. Yet Electa Draper and the Denver Post have refused to correct the following false headline they ran:

First find the location of your neighborhood caucus meeting and attend it on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Then, when the chairman ask if anyone has a resolution to offer, simply provide him with a printout of this resolution, and you can read the single sentence to the group yourself if you'd like:

Be it resolved that we support the Colorado Personhood Amendment effort to protect the unborn child at every stage of development.
Depending upon your precinct process, you or someone may make a motion to vote on your resolution, and a second person may have to second the motion, and then there may be discussion. In the last two elections, our resolution passed at hundreds of caucuses statewide, and if it passes now in yours, we want to make sure that it is voted on at the county assembly! Then as it is likely that it will pass there, it will go on for consideration at the state party assembly where it will almost certainly pass and become part of the state party platform! Denver, CO -- Capitol Press Conference Launches Round Three! A personhood coalition in November 2011 announced the wording of Colorado's 2012 Right To Life amendment launching Round Three, Colorado's third attempt to protect every unborn child by love and by law. The personhood coalition of Colorado Right To Life, Personhood Colorado, and Personhood USA submitted the following language to the Secretary of State:
Be it Enacted by the People of the State of Colorado Article II of the Constitution of the State of Colorado is amended by the addition of a new section to read:
Section 32. The right to life. (1) Purpose. In order to affirm basic human dignity, be it resolved that the right to life in this constitution applies equally to all innocent persons. (2) Effect. The intentional killing of any innocent person is prohibited. (a) Only birth control that kills a person shall be affected by this section. (b) Only in vitro fertilization and assisted reproduction that kills a person shall be affected by this section. (c) Medical treatment for life threatening physical conditions intended to preserve life shall not be affected by this section. (d) Spontaneous miscarriages shall not be affected by this section. (e) No innocent child created through rape or incest shall be killed for the crime of his or her father. (3) Definitions. As used in this section, (a) “Person” applies to every human being regardless of the method of creation. (b) A “human being” is a member of the species homo sapiens at any stage of development. (c) “Spontaneous miscarriage” is the unintentional termination of a pregnancy. (d) “Child” includes a human being prior to and during birth. (e) “Medical treatment for life threatening physical conditions intended to preserve life” includes but is not limited to treatment for cancer, ectopic and molar pregnancy, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, and placenta previa. (4) Self-executing, and severability provision. All provisions of this section are self- executing and are severable.
Dear friend of the innocent, CRTL needs $60,000 now! We have committed to our coalition partners that we will gather 60,000 signatures.
